Shear Maintenance

Why should I give my shears regular tune-ups?

Routine maintenance can greatly prolong the life of your shears and will keep them operating at their peak performance.

What is the best way to maintain my shears?

Keep blades clean between haircuts with a soft cloth.

Add a few drops of oil to the inner pivot area daily, then open and close the shear several times. This will help clean debris
from the pivot area. Carefully wipe away any excess oil and/or debris.

Once a week, after oiling your shears, check their tension adjustment. Lift and drop the handle. They should stand open at the pivot area. If it falls more than 1/4 of the way shut, tighten the shear by turning the tension knob slightly (1 or 2 clicks) clockwise. After adjustment, repeat the test and if necessary repeat the adjustment procedure. More tension is better for a shear than not enough.

Common Issues

Shear pushes hair when cutting.
Solution: Your shear needs sharpening.

Shear bends hair when cutting.
Solution: Check the tension and adjust until the blades stand open at the pivot area.

How do I adjust the thumb and or finger ring size?
Solution: Use the thumb and finger spacers provided with your shear to customize the fit.  They simply snap into place as needed.

Shear tension seems overly tight when cutting.
Solution: Debris and hair have likely built up in the pivot area. Hold the shear vertically and add a few drops of oil to the inner pivot area. Open and close the shear several times, as this will help clean debris from the pivot area. Carefully wipe away any excess oil and/or debris.
